CULTURE
An important part of the Danish Embassy consists of strengthening the cultural ties between Denmark and Lithuania, to make Danish Culture familiar and known to the Lithuanian population and to help those people who seek information about Denmark. The Danish Embassy is involved in cultural projects and has a limited budget for culture.
Many Lithuanians have heard about or maybe even read fairytales by Hans Christian Andersen, philosophical works by Soeren Kierkegaard or the masterful storytelling of Karen Blixen - and all three 'Great Danes' are translated into Lithuanian. Although Danes are very proud of being the oldest kingdom in the world, Danish culture and art of the 21st Century is vibrant and dynamic.
Culture is an important aspect of the identity of individuals, groups, nations and regions. Like people in the rest of the world, Danes feel unique and want to remain special in this age of globalisation. But as for other nations we need dialogue, not isolation, to maintain and develop our specialities in art, theatre, film, design, sports etc. - a dialogue which we have here in Lithuania.
An important collaborator to the Danish embassy as regards Danish culture in Lithuania is the Danish Cultural Institute in Vilnius. The institute works with Danish-Lithuanian cultural exchange, and has information about cultural events of almost any kind. The head of the institute, Audra Sabaliauskiene, as well as the other staff, speak English. For contact-information about the institute, please see
